Sounds like a lovely place to stay (of course I don't know the hotel, but the location sounds much nicer than many of the other tourist hotels.)

However, you could NOT walk to Central Park unless you are a really good walker! When I was in college, I used to take a class up around 56th Street and 7th Avenue which is just a little south of Central Park and on really nice days I would walk home to my dorm on 8th Street in the Village. It was a LONG walk and all my friends thought I was nuts!

Now, it's doable, don't get me wrong, and you'll see a lot of NYC that way, which is a wonderful way to see NYC. But it's not the kind of walk that most New Yorkers take, and we are well know for walking as transporation here! So if it seems like a lot to your average New Yorker, you know it's a lot.

the Village is an excellent area to base your vacation stay. you should be no more than a 5-10 minute walk to a subway that will take you anywhere you want to go.

it is *possible* to walk from the Village to Central Park, in that you don't have to cross any bridges(!), but it will take at least an hour to do so, so i'd take the subway!

however, what many tourists do not seem to do is ride the local city bus, and if you are anywhere near West 4th Street and Sixth Avenue, you can hop on the M5 or M6 and take your time to take in the city on your way uptown to Central Park. especially on the M6, you'll pass right by Rockefeller Center with Central Park being the last stop.

the M5 bus not only goes up Sixth Avenue, but continues past Central Park and passes the Time Warner Center, Lincoln Center, and makes its way to Riverside Drive and up along Riverside Park, and then up through Washington Heights.

i always say that the M5 bus is the best cheapest tourist bus in town, because its route takes in a lot of the most heavily touristed areas of Manhattan, and with an unlimited MetroCard, you can hop on and hop off all day long.

The one thing about Greenwich Village and the West Village in general is the fact that the nightlife around there is hopping! You can hit the bars and clubs if that is your thing, at night. The area is reasonable in terms of access to the tourist sites (Brooklyn Bridge, Statue Of Liberty, Times Square, etc). And if you happen to visit during Halloween, the Halloween parade is a blast! It has to be one of the BEST parades around as people walk all over in the most unique costumes!

Walking from the village to Central Park is a bit of a hike. Your best bet would be to take the "C" train from the West 4th Street station (at 6th Avenue/Avenue Of The Americas" and stay on that until 72nd Street. You could take the "A" express as well and get out 59th Street/Columbus Circle...at the south end of the park. But remember if on the "A" to get out at 59th Street or else you are going WAAAAYYYY up to 125th Street.

That's why I recommend the "C" which is a local. And the way the stations are set up along that area, there's no time loss.
